How To Commission A Painting

Taking an initial idea to completion, the artist will work with the client work to bring their idea to reality. Whether you are commissioning a large, medium or small, public or private painting, the process remains the same. These are the steps you will follow as you commission a painting. Payment structure may flexible to suit client and artist.

Choosing the subject

Finding the right scene and expressing your thoughts on what you visualize for the painting will enable the artist to understand your wishes and to create your painting is the key to owning an artwork you, your family, or your organization, will enjoy and value for a lifetime. It is best to find an existing piece by the artist, that reflects what you are looking for and in the style you desire.

Provide your information

Before you approach Allan you may want to answer these questions yourself so you are able to clearly convey your expectations.

  • What size would you like your painting to be?
  • Do you want your subject painted from life or from photograph(s)?
  • What is your motivation for commissioning a painting?
  • Do you feel strongly that certain colors or shades of color should be included in the painting? If so be sure to let the artist know.
  • What is your budget? Be honest with yourself and the artist.
  • What is your deadline?

If the painting is a portrait, landscape or still life and not to be painted from life, please make available photographs of the subject to help the artist determine the level of detail needed. This will also enable the artist to give a better estimate.

Quotation agreed

The artist will give you an in-depth quotation for the final painting and an explanation of what the client should expect and will receive as an end product.

First payment due & painting begins

Once the quotation is accepted by the client and on receiving a 25% deposit the artist will begin work on the painting process.  A sitting schedule will be arranged for person(s) able to model for the artist or if photographs (must be large high quality) are supplied of subject the painting(s) will commence.

Painting Completion and Delivery.

On completion of the painting the artwork will be delivered in person (if practical) by artist or sent by courier to client in UK or Overseas. On receiving the artwork(s) the client would make final payment or alternately, pay by installments, as terms agreed with artist.

Gift Certificate.

Allan is happy to issue a Gift Certificate for anyone wishing to present a gift at short notice.  This is ideal, if Allan has several orders for commissions and there is waiting list of a  few months for commissions to be completed.
